The three main types are rising damp (ground moisture rising up walls, shown by a low tide mark), penetrating damp (water coming in from outside through a defect, worse after rain), and condensation (warm moist air meeting cold surfaces, causing black mould and misty windows). Each needs a different treatment, which is why diagnosis comes first.

Condensation appears as black spotty mould, often around windows, in corners and behind furniture, and is worse in winter. Rising damp is confined to the bottom metre or so of ground-floor walls with a tide mark and salt staining. A survey with moisture readings confirms which you have.

No. True rising damp is relatively rare; a large share of so-called rising damp is actually condensation, a leak or bridging. That's why we never assume — we diagnose before recommending any treatment.
